本片取材自文學(xué)著作《坎特伯雷故事集》，影片則在原著眾多獨立的小故事中選取八段故事，以短小精悍、赤裸露骨的敘事風格，反映了中世紀英國的社會百態(tài)。這部強調(diào)性愛作為反抗宗教束縛、爭取人性自由武器的電影，逼真的刻畫了一個個迥然不同的眾生相，窮奢極欲的城主，專營告密敲詐的小人，故弄玄虛勾引鄰家少婦的學(xué)生，放蕩荒淫的女財主，以及生活在社會底層的小無賴等等。由意大利著名導(dǎo)演皮埃爾 帕索里尼執(zhí)導(dǎo)的影片《坎特伯雷故事集》，改編自十四世紀英國詩人杰弗雷 middot;喬叟的同名詩體小說集。導(dǎo)演帕索里尼親自扮演喬叟。本片是帕索里尼;生命三部曲 的中第二部，另外兩部分別為《十日談》和《一千零一夜》。影片榮獲1972年第22屆柏林國際電影節(jié)金熊獎。
