　　堪薩斯的農(nóng)民威廉（克林特·伊斯特伍德 Clint Eastwood ）年輕時(shí)曾是出名的殺手和劫匪，然而當(dāng)遇上了克勞迪亞后，他的生活開始徹底改變。威廉和克勞迪亞結(jié)婚生子后，洗手不干，一家人過著幸福的生活。好景不長，克勞迪亞不久故去，威廉獨(dú)立帶著兩個(gè)孩子過著清貧寧靜的生活。　　這時(shí)，該地區(qū)發(fā)生了一起牛仔醉酒毆打妓女并將其毀容的惡性事件，壞蛋警長達(dá)格特（吉恩·哈克曼 Gene Hackman 飾）只將此事草草了結(jié)，兇手仍逍遙法外。當(dāng)?shù)丶伺娂娋桢X，要求懸紅1000美金請殺手來伸張正義。“思科菲爾德小子”找到威廉，要求合伙干這票買賣。為了給孩子們一個(gè)幸福富足的家庭，威廉終于答應(yīng)再次出山。
